It has been rather a long time since I last wrote you all. As it had been over a year since I worked on a play I had forgotten two major things that happen when your involved in a show. Firstly that it really does completely take over your life (I know it seems so obvious) day and night. Especially with a show like this that had a handful of matinee performances thrown in. The second thing is your dietary patterns whilst working on a show, you eat so much crap! Cast and crew daily bring in sweets, cookies, crisps and whatever else constitutes as 'brain food' for the show. Let me tell you grocery shopping today was so exciting! I bought brussel sprouts, avocados, rice, tomato soup, pasta, bread and so much more non show crap related foods.
The production finished last night. It was overall a big success with a handful of sold out performances. Overall the feedback was very positive. Unfortunately not a lot of press but none the less a great first theatre experience here in Melbourne! I continued to learn more about lighting and about some interesting habits of the Australian theatregoer. I was slightly appalled show after show to see how late people turn up! I think we had two on start times throughout the run. Not cool. And so we ended yesterday with a sold out show. In Australia a load in and load out are a bump in and a bump out! I kid you not! So anyhoo yesterdays bump out was quick and easy. The cast party was naturally held at the 'Nest' otherwise known as the directors home which is a big warehouse in Brunswick. Great place to visit and work but could never imagine living there. Tons of beer and tasty dips. Also at about 2 in the morning the lead of the show and a friend started playing their Didgeridoos. It was then and there I truly knew I lived in Australia! The last thing you probably want to hear about the show is the gossip. The juicy gossip. As of the middle of last week I am dating the lead of the show! We instantly had chemistry and it has been really nice. A showmance of sorts but going on post show too. He is actually on his way over with a DVD and a bottle of Australian red. I told him to surprise me with the film. And one last thing is that I had told you all originally that it was an unpaid gig. Not the case! The show made a profit which means we as cast and crew make some dosh! The exact amount has not been finalized but should be around the $200 each ballpark. Very pleasing news to my ears yesterday when I heard!
I have more things to tell you but will tantalize you with those details later in the week.
